TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electronic Muscle Stimulation. It is a drug free method of pain relief that has been used to treat a wide variety of muscle and joint problems, as well as many other painful conditions. The relief pain is one of the most important problems in medicine. For centuries many forms of analgesic drugs were the only means by which pain could be combated. Recent decades have witnessed a dramatic progress in pain research which has provided new insights into the neurophysiological basis of pain. The discoveries of the physiological mechanisms of pain control have led to new conceptual aspects of the perception of pain. Even more important is that these discoveries have paved the way for the development of new techniques and methods for the alleviation of pain. One of these methods is TENS. TENS uses electrical impulses to stimulate the nerve endings at or near the site of pain, diminishing the pain or replacing it with a tingling or massage-like sensation. There is at present abundant evidence that it provides an effective tool for the alleviation of certain pain syndromes.How does TENS work?
How TENS works is to stimulate an extra flow of sensory signals that travel to the central nervous system (CNS). These signals induce the release of endorphins, which can particularly reduce pain and stress, into the blood stream and act similarly to medication. What is EMS?
EMS stands for Electronic Muscle Stimulation. It is predominantly used by doctors and physical therapists to prevent, or reduce, muscle atrophy. Atrophy is the weakening and loss of muscle tone, which is experienced after surgeries or injuries. For heart-lung development, EMS is applied to achieve moderate muscular contractions over periods of approximately 30 minutes, i.e. body toning. To develop muscle strength applications are performed very strongly to perform near maximum strength contractions for a limited number of repetitions. For rehabilitation of weakened body conditions, EMS is applied from a very low workload, which, progressively increases in load intensity to the requirement for normal living. With EMS training (as with normal exercise) a person’s body adapts to its workload.How does EMS work?
The body uses miniscule amounts of electricity in two ways.
1. To pass currents across cell walls by way of ionization particles, which causes nutrients and waste products to pass to and from the cells.
2. To generate changing electrical potentials. These potentials travel in nerve fibers to initiate and maintain body functions.
For EMS to clone the actions of the body’s natural nerve impulses, they are introduced in pulse trains, at the body’s natural functional frequencies (rate).
How EMS works is to activate an extra flow of motor signals traveling from the Central Nervous System (CNS) to the muscles to cause them to contract (exercise). EMS is not a replacement for normal physical exercise, however it is beneficial in increasing the blood circulatory flow to the region of exercise. This hastens the rehabilitation period after injury or physical trauma. How does it work?
An electronic pulse stimulates the underlying nerve fibres via self-adhesive electrodes placed directly on the skin. We found your stand at the Royal Adelaide Show amongst a collection of other companies all attempting to sell all manner of pain-relief solutions. Six months later this device is used on a weekly basis by my wife as an integral part of her routine. However, it is my experience I’d like to relate.
I am one of those people who have never really experienced migraine pain. One day I got a sinus infection and I found out about it. By the 4th day of unremitting pain I was ready to slash my wrists. I started with Panadol, went to nurofen, nurofen plus then nurofen migrant version and was reaching for the Panadol forte when it occurred to me that we had this SuperStim device. Nothing else had touched the pain so I shrugged and tried it out.
Half and hour later when I took the electrodes off I was feeling much better. Half an hour after that I was completely well. I couldn’t believe it.
The relief lasted 10 hours, and then the headache came back. I applied the device again, it got better again. It was no coincidence; this was definitely the device helping me.
By the next day I didn’t need the device or any drug. I was all better.

To whom it may concernI have been suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis for more than 13 years. In 1993 I had an ESR blood reading of 90. Specialists usually try to keep the reading at between 1 and 12. My reading caused pain that rendered me into a suicidal state. Since those days I have been under the care of Dr Sonja Nagel here in Toowoomba and life has been bearable except for my knees. Usually I can not bear to stand still for more than 10 minutes without looking for a chair because of the pain in my knees.
